The story of Frederique Constant

THE HISTORY OF FREDERIQUE CONSTANT: A LEGACY OF TIMELESS LUXURY

Frederique Constant is a name synonymous with luxury, quality and craftsmanship in the world of watches. Although the brand is relatively young compared to some other Swiss watchmakers, it has built a rich history steeped in innovation and passion for craftsmanship. We dive into the history of Frederique Constant, from its humble origins to the globally recognized brand it is today.

A Dream of Perfection

Frederique Constant was founded in 1988 by married couple Aletta Bax and Peter Stas. Their vision was clear: create high-quality Swiss watches accessible to a wide audience, without compromising on quality or aesthetics. The name "Frederique Constant" is a tribute to their grandparents: Frederique Schreiner and Constant Stas, both of whom played a role in the love of watches that Aletta and Peter developed.

The First Collection

In 1992, the brand introduced its first collection of six watches powered by Swiss movements. These models, designed in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Rougemont, marked the start of a new era for the brand. The watches were well received and laid the foundation for the continued growth of Frederique Constant.

Innovation and Expansion

What set Frederique Constant apart from other brands was not only its commitment to quality, but also its drive for innovation. In 2004, the brand introduced its first in-house timepiece, the Heart Beat Manufacture. This timepiece was a technical achievement and reflected the brand's commitment to making watches that were not only beautiful, but also technically advanced.

The Heart Beat series became a hallmark of Frederique Constant, with the iconic aperture on the dial revealing the beating heart of the watch. This design was not only visually appealing, but also showed the craftsmanship that went into each watch.

Enduring Luxury

In the years that followed, Frederique Constant expanded its collection with several new models and complications, including the first fully branded tourbillon in 2008. The brand also stayed true to its ethos of affordable luxury, which made it accessible to a wider group of watch lovers.

Frederique Constant also has a strong focus on sustainability and social responsibility. The brand is committed to environmentally friendly practices and supports various charities, reflecting their dedication to a better world.

A New Era

In 2016, Frederique Constant was acquired by the Citizen Watch Company. This acquisition provided new opportunities for growth and innovation, while the brand retained its Swiss roots and identity. Under the Citizen umbrella, Frederique Constant expanded its international reach and integrated new technologies, such as the hybrid smartwatch, which combines traditional watch technology with modern features.

Timeless Elegance

Frederique Constant has blazed an impressive trail in the watch industry in a relatively short period of time. The brand combines classic elegance with modern innovations, resulting in watches loved by collectors and newcomers alike. The history of Frederique Constant is a story of passion, craftsmanship and dedication to making watches that stand the test of time. As the brand continues to grow and evolve, it remains true to its core philosophy: to make luxury watches accessible without sacrificing quality and craftsmanship.
